Sheridan Fire District

Sheridan Fire District (SFD) in Oregon deserves a kitchen makeover. SFD has served this community for more than 100 years and is a part of this community. SFD not only devotes itself to saving the lives and property of others, but is involved in other community organizations like Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Boy Scouts and our local schools. In the recent past, we have donated AEDs to the fitness center and local high school. We also decorate the town for various holidays, lead the way in the local parades, host the annual Cookies with Santa and staff the annual fishing derby.

What makes SFD unique is our Resident Intern program. We provide EMT and firefighter students with on-the-job training and experience while they attend school. Our resident interns work 240 hours a month alongside a paramedic/firefighter and we give them a free place to live and tuition assistance. We pride ourselves in the fact that our sleepers don’t stand back and watch; they are right there asking questions, helping to put out the fires, free the trapped victim and treat the sick.

Aside from our paid staff and resident interns, our facility is used by 46 volunteer firefighters and various community organizations. Each morning, our kitchen table is surrounded by volunteers and the occasional community member. Each Wednesday night, before and after drill, our kitchen becomes a place of gathering to discuss the district, community events and our lives in general. Several times a month we open our doors and let the community gather, again the kitchen is a common place to congregate before, during breaks, and after the gathering.

The 170-square-foot kitchen has grown too small for the career staff, resident interns, and the various volunteers/community members that stop by each day. The cabinets in the kitchen are very shallow, in awkward locations and there are not enough of them to accommodate the food, dishes, pots and pans we use. The two refrigerators in the kitchen are in need of replacing; they have begun to break down and are not nearly big enough to support the needs of the station.

When there are large gatherings at the station, be it district or community, we unfortunately cannot rely on the use of our kitchen. Since it was built in 1986, there have been no upgrades to the wiring, causing issues like breakers tripping, limiting the use of devices like crock pots and other cooking devices. The kitchen also has a single residential stove/oven, not nearly enough to support the daily preparation of meals, let alone a medium or large gathering.

Giving our kitchen a makeover will help our paid staff and the resident interns as they strive to produce the next generation of firefighters. The makeover will make the morning coffee hour and the weekly drill nights more comfortable. It will make our gatherings all the more meaningful and our community and this district would be very appreciative.

    This FD is deserving!
I had the privilege back in 1992 to cook a turkey dinner there and know first hand it could definitely be a lot more workable for these great folks. By the looks of the pics nothing has changed for the most part….so please help them! VOTE!!!

This is an outstanding fire department with very dedicated, loyal local volunteer citizens, students and staff. This community depends on their services. Please support them.

As a retired firefighter give the small town a brake they don’t have the number of supporter as the bigger departments have.

I was a volunteer there when the building was just a year old. I know what a service these folks provide and know they would only ask for what they deserve. Good luck guys.
